Building bright futures

The governing body

We are a group of parents, staff and members of the community who, as a collective, are the strategic leaders of the school.

Each of us is passionate about Christ Church and volunteer our time to act as a ‘critical friend’ to the school, helping to make sure that every child gets the best possible education.

We’re responsible for three core areas: (1) the school’s vision, ethos and strategic direction (2) holding the headteacher to account for the school’s educational performance (3) overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure money is well spent. The day-to-day running of the school is entrusted to the headteacher and staff.

We meet together twice a term and in smaller sub-committees. Copies of the non-confidential minutes from the full governing body meetings are available from the school office on request.

The school’s instrument of government sets out the structure of the governing body. In summary, our governing body consists of two parent governors, one local authority governor, one staff governor, the headteacher and seven foundation governors.

The governors are keen to hear the views from parents and carers, particularly in relation to the strategic direction of the school. Please feel free to contact us in writing through the school office. If you have a specific concern about your child we would urge you to take this up first with your child's class teacher. If it’s a specific issues relating to the whole school then please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with Mr Morant as he may well be able to satisfy your concern quickly, avoiding any delay caused through contacting the Governors first.

Meet the governors

Amina Mahmood

I have enjoyed working with the school as it has given me great pleasure to be part of the community. I have become more involved with school, running Art clubs, class Rep for Year 3, PFA and creating ideas to raise money for the school which I have done successfully. I have made great progress in building relationships with the parents as well as the children and it is for that reason I put myself forward to become a Parent Governor and one of the things that I will make my priority is to improve the communication between parents and the school and also create an awareness of what out role is all about and how parents can benefit.

It has been my privilege and pleasure to have been the headteacher of Christ Church School since September 2013. Previously I was a headteacher of a primary school in Hammersmith for 12 years and in total I have been teaching in London primary schools for 29 years. Christ Church School is a wonderful community which serves the needs of all children and families in the Brick Lane/Spitalfields area. We are very ambitious in raising the profile of the school and we are continually striving to improve the quality of education that is delivered to all of the children. I work very closely with Michael Michaelides, chair of governors, and the governing body, to support the strategic direction of the school so that we can fulfil our aims and ambitions in all areas in the life of the school.

I have a long association and connection with Christ Church School.  I went there as a child, taught there for four years and finally my children went there. I believe it is unique school that has served our children and local community and I want to be part of the team that makes sure our children get the best education possible.
I am a headteacher of a local infant school and feel my skills and experiences could support the school to ensure excellent outcomes for our children. As a school governor, I have a particular interest in the early years and KS1.

Christ Church School is an important part of the life of the church family at Christ Church Spitalfields, where I am an ordained minister.  I have strategic management experience in the not-for-profit sector, including experience in education in Tower Hamlets as Director of Corporate Services for a charity providing alternative provision to young people who hadn't flourished in mainstream schools.  I have been struck by the combination of friendliness and ambition at Christ Church School, and am keen to see local young people do well in this diverse and vibrant area of London; as a school governor, I am keen to see the management of the school support excellent teaching and learning for all the pupils we serve.

I joined Christ Church as a governor in 2010 after being introduced to the school through the church. I was previously a governor for a few years, I re-joined the governing body in 20169 and am excited to build on the wonderful work the children and staff have done to make Christ Church such a good school and a welcoming place for everyone in the community. I have been a lawyer in the city for the past 10 years or so, now working about 10 minutes' walk from the school. I hope to bring my legal and organisational skills to the running of the school and to learn a bit myself from the inspiring people associated with the school.

Elizabeth Watson

As a member of the Children's Church team at Christ Church Spitalfields I became aware of Christ Church Primary School when invited to come along to school events. From my first visit the school has struck me as a welcoming place; a village school set in the heart of London.

I bring a varied set of skills and experiences gained from teaching, strategic development, management, property, international living and developing and implementing systems and processes to the governing body.

Having run a property company for the last three years I understand the varied factors involved in budgeting and finance management, staff management, building management and strategic oversight.

My experiences in education, as teaching staff, administration staff, anti-bullying advisor and tutor allow me to bring insight into the education system and how it can work in a variety of settings as well as an understanding of both education policy and curriculum.

As a governor I look forward to supporting our children to reach their full potential.
